Terrain Models
This is a high resolution, scale model of the island of Ireland.
Pieces such as this can be created for any area of Ireland, or indeed the world. They are a beautiful way to illustrate many things, from simply displaying topography to deeply exploring our relationship to place & identity.
Light & shadow adds an additional layer, allowing the viewer to explore the portrait from different perspectives.
At approx 80cm wide and 1m high, the scale shown here is 1:444,000 and can be made bigger in size by splitting into sections.
Using open sourced data from satellite imagery, a series of digital meshes are carefully scaled and aligned before programming a CNC Router to cut the model out of solid material. It is then sanded, primed, painted and framed.
